The company would be creating Linux ++, a type of fast and powerful memory for The Machine, as they call their next computer
Hewlett-Packard could
revolutionize coming years in the whole computer industry. It is that the
company is working on creating a new operating system for their next computer,
which named The Machine.
Is estimated to be much more
energy-efficient and more powerful than current products. HP wants to achieve
its goals using a new type of memory (based on an electronic component called
memristor) instead of the two systems using today's computers.
"The model used in the
beginning of the computation is reflected in every since and is restricting
us," says the chief architect of The Machine, Kirk Bresniker. The project
is being developed by HP Labs and employs three quarters of the 200 researchers
laboratorio.Por its part, the CEO of the company, Meg Whitman, increased
funding to support the project.
The Machine is designed to
compete with servers like Google and Facebook. Bresniker explains that some
elements of its design could end adapted to smaller devices.
However, HP still has to make
significant progress both in software and hardware for your new computer
becomes reality. Specifically, the company has to perfect a new form of
computer memory
According Bresniker, his team
intends to complete an operating system designed for Linux called The Machine
++ in June 2015. They will present a software that mimics the hardware design
The Machine along with other tools for developers to test their code in the new
operating system. Over time, it is intended to replace ++ for Linux operating
system designed from scratch for the Machine and HP has named Carbon.
Experiments conducted with Linux
++ programmers help publicize the project and contribute to the progress of HP,
he explained. And expected to serve for more clues about what kind of software
will benefit more from the new approach, for example.

The main difference between the
Machine and conventional computers is that the design of HP will use a single
type of memory for temporary storage and long-term data. Today's computers
store their operational systems programs and files either on a hard disk or a
USB stick. To run a program or load a document, you have to recover data from
the hard drive and load them into a form of memory, RAM, which is faster but
can not store data densely not keep when the power fails.
In The Machine, HP plans to use a
single type of memory, as memristors, for storage of data in both the short and
long term. No need to transfer data from one memory to another should provide
more power and saves time. Besides the memristor memory can retain data when no
current should be faster than the RAM and offers the promise of storing more
data than current comparable hard drives.
The Machine design includes other
novel features as fiber optics instead of copper wires to transmit data. HP
simulations suggest that a server built following the instructions of The
Machine could be up to six times more potent than an equivalent conventional
design, besides using a 1.25% of the power and occupy tenth of space.
Companies like Google are very
attentive to the ideas of HP, because they trust large numbers of servers and
look forward to improvements in energy efficiency and producing computer, says
Professor of Georgia Institute of Technology (USA), Umakishore Ramachandran.
But the teacher also warns that a radically different design as proposed by The
Machine will require new methods of writing software.
